A Sponsored Review

Emily Post's Great Get-Togethers: Casual Gatherings and Elegant Parties at Home [Paperback]

This is a modern book (2010) written about the old-fashioned concept of hospitality.  I was always so excited whenever my mother said the words, "we are having company."  It meant a lot of work, but it also meant that we would be hearing new stories by new voices.  Or, maybe, basking in the comfort of familiar faces.  Either way, it took a little bit of planning to pull it off so that everyone had a good time.

Anna Post and Lizzie Post take us through the methods that made the Post family famous for hosting guests.  Whether you are just adding these responsibilities to your etiquette skill set or are well-seasoned, a glance at the Table of Contents tells us that there is something for everyone to take away.

Part One has us developing our style as hosts.  The chapters are all about being prepared, including how to stock the pantry and bar for impromptu get-togethers; when and how to hire help; and, party-ready food and drink.  Recipes are included.

Part Two brings us to specific themes with decorating and menu ideas.  There are chapters on hosting children, as well as house-guests.

What makes this book special are the lists and calendars that allow you to plan ahead or be able to entertain on a moment's notice.

All of my questions were answered in the book content, but there was also a section of FAQs that approached other issues, such as what do to when a guest brings a date unexpectedly or has too much to drink.

The Emily Post Institute has produced a terrific resource on how to be your most gracious when receiving guests in your home.  This would make a fabulous wedding, college graduation or housewarming gift.  Skills such as these are so important in the social and business world.  This book, like manners, will never go out of style.

Happy Independence Day!

Enjoy this beautiful rendition of a classic as sung by Ray Charles on the Dick Cavett Show in 1972--a year of war and a bad economy.  We still have our dignity and our freedom!
